Traditional Chinese Medicines: Molecular Structures, Natural Sources and Applications

Traditional Chinese Medicines: Molecular Structures, Natural Sources and Applications

In laboratories around the world the active principles in traditional herbal medicines are being isolated and characterized. A systematic effort at the Chinese Academy of Sciences is underway to identify the structure-activity relationships that result from the link between chemistry and medicine that is permitted by this
data. This book, which provides the only systematic English-language description of the chemical structures and pharmacological effects of compounds active in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), is now in its second edition. The new edition provides English-language monographs on over 9000 chemicals isolated from nearly 4000 natural sources used in Chinese medicine and features the addition of in-depth bioactivity data for many of the compounds. Effects and indications of the medicines are included. Extensive indexing permits cross-referencing among English, Chinese and Latin names for natural medicinal sources, effects and indications, and the chemical components of the medicines.

The second edition of Traditional Chinese Medicines includes 2300 new compounds, 2400 additional plant sources, more CAS Registry Numbers, and more pharmacological data. The structure of the book has been extensively reorganised to make cross referencing the data much simpler. This new edition is therefore a substantial improvement on the first edition of this important reference on the structural chemistry of traditional Chinese medicines.

The secret lives of plants have captured the imagination and respect of Traditional Medicinals for more than 30 years. Blending a reverence of plants with the wisdom of the ancient arts, Traditional Medicinals combine the best of herbal medicine with the most modern scientific methods of quality control to produce a line of traditional herbal tea formulas distributed across the country.

It all started in early 1974, when three young friends started Traditional Medicinals in the back store room of a small herb shop along the Russian River in Northern California. The company was founded with the intention of providing healing remedies, while preserving the knowledge and herbal formulas of Traditional Herbal Medicine, or THM. At the time, traditional herbal tea infusions, likely the earliest form of medicine, had all but faded away here in this country. And never before had these safe and effective medicines been available in convenient tea bags. Over the decades that followed, the company introduced millions of health conscious consumers to traditional herbal tea formulas and the concepts of THM. These effective natural medicines were well received and Traditional Medicinals has grown dramatically. Well over a billion cups of tea have been produced at the company's California facility, and many products such as Smooth Move, Throat Coat, and Organic Echinacea Plus have become mainstream and can readily be found throughout North America.

Natural Solutions: Vibrant Health Balanced Living

Natural Solutions: Vibrant Health Balanced Living

Targeting consumers who are passionate about their health, magazine provides natural holistic and alternative therapy. With a focus on the power of nutrition and healthy foods regular features include-- Prescribe for Yourself, More Than Skin Deep, Healthy Haute Cuisine and much more.

Review By J. Brennan
While I preferred this magazine a few years ago when it was called Alternative Medicine, it still has useful information and can be beneficial to your health. I learned I was vitamin D deficient because I scheduled a test after reading an article about this problem in this magazine. I still miss the layout of the old magazine, but Natural Solutions remains a useful source of information for alternative approaches to health.

Cholesterol: What Is It, Why Are People Freaking Out About It, and What You Can Do To Lower It

High cholesterol claims thousands of lives every year.

The chance of you not having high cholesterol are pretty slim. In this society of fast and processed food, most Americans are at a strong risk for high cholesterol.

Sadly, thousands of men and women ignore the warning signs until it’s too late.

Do you know the warning signs for high cholesterol? Are you aware of your LDL and HDL levels? Do you even know what that means?

If you don’t know what these things are, you may be at a risk for this potential killer.

You will find answers to the questions above and more in this informative book Cholesterol: What Is It, Why Are People Freaking Out About It, And What You Can Do to Lower It.

Cholesterol is written for you, the person who always hears about the negative effects of cholesterol, but doesn’t understand the medical jargon. This book spells out in plain English all there is to know about cholesterol.

You will learn what cholesterol is, it's history, the 3 types of lipoproteins - VLDL, LDL, HDL - and which one of the them is known as the bad cholesterol and the reason why.

You will also learn how cholesterol leads to heart disease, how to know if you're at risk, and more importantly, the many natural and medicinal ways you can manage your cholesterol.

Natural Health & Vegetarian Life

Natural Health & Vegetarian Life

Magazine is jointly published by the Natural Health Society of Australia, The Australian Vegetarian Society (NSW and ACT), New Vegetarian & Natural Health is published as a forum through which the message of a more healthy and humane lifestyle can be conveyed.

Health (1-year)

Health (1-year)

Health is the smart woman's guide to life, covering beauty, well-being, fitness, and food/nutrition with intelligence, flair, and credibility. The magazine's lifestyle approach makes it a pleasure to read, not a duty. Health provides a sense of community along with empowering information, powerful narrative, and compelling art-all to reinforce the message that healthy living is the way to feel and look your very best.

Everytime this magazine comes in the mail, I sit down and read it cover to cover immediately. For active people (and those aspiring non-actives) the articles are informative and often are issues or topics that you have been thinking about already. I also like how they start off with different little articles and facts in the beginning and then move onto the bigger topics.

Being a 'Foodie' I can tell you that the recipes (towards the back of the magazine) are fantastic -- I save at least one from each issue - delicious and not complex.

I like the magazine so much, I've signed on for another two years!

The G.I. Diet: The Easy, Healthy Way to Permanent Weight Loss

The G.I. Diet: The Easy, Healthy Way to Permanent Weight Loss

Review By Amadan "amadanb" (NY)
The thing about diets is that any "diet" you adopt for some specific, finite purpose (e.g. "I will eat a low-carb diet until I have lost 20 pounds" or "I will reduce my intake of fat and sugar until my cholesterol levels improve") is that they assume your "diet" is temporary, and at some point (after reaching your goal, presumably), you can "go back" to eating "normally." Well, if eating "normally" resulted in your current physical condition, what do you think will happen when you resume eating that way? Hence the failure of most diets. The only way a diet is going to work for you permanently is if it can become your PERMANENT DIET, i.e., the way you eat for the rest of your life. So, who can follow a low-carb diet or a coconut diet or a no-sugar-or-fat-or-anything-tasty diet or eat supplements and prepackaged meals FOREVER? No one.

This diet you can follow permanently. Yes, it does mean giving up junk food and greasy, fatty foods or foods made mostly of sugar and starch (or at least, limiting them to the occasional cheat meal, and by OCCASIONAL I mean "every couple of months," not "a couple times a week"!). But if you're not prepared to cut McDonald's and Oreos and Haagen Daaz out of your life, or at least confine them to a RARE treat, then you're not prepared to lose weight permanently, because you'll never accomplish any serious weight loss goals eating that stuff, sorry. The thing is, the G.I. diet doesn't try to exclude entire arbitrary categories of food or tell you you can only eat foods from certain groups. Instead, it lists foods as "red light" (don't eat at all, except for those RARE treats), "yellow light" (indulge occasionally but don't make them a regular part of your meals) and "green light" (eat all you want).

Now, here's the thing -- While the G.I. diet is based on the "glycemic index," i.e., how fast different foods metabolize into sugar -- there is nothing magical about the "green light" foods. Any book on nutrition will tell you what's healthy to eat (fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lowfat/nonfat dairy, lean meats) and what's not (sugar, fatty meats, full-fat dairy, anything made of "enriched" white flour, which basically turns into sugar almost immediately upon hitting your bloodstream). So you can follow this diet without obsessing over the GI ratings of different foods. The red light/yellow light/green light system is a useful guide, so you know, for example, that bananas, while not "bad" for you, are "yellow light" because they have a much higher starch content, and apples or berries are a better choice. No surprise that bacon is "red light," but there are plenty of meats that are "green light," you just have to be choosy about both your selections and your portion sizes. (If you're a vegetarian or even a vegan, the GI diet will suit you fine too.)

Mostly what you will learn is the choices you should substitute for less optimal foods. Apples are better than bananas. Sweet potatoes are better than regular potatoes. Brown rice is better than white rice. Old fashioned oatmeal is better than "instant" oatmeal. Skim milk is better than whole milk. Canadian bacon is better than ham or regular bacon. White meat is better than dark meat, and tenderloin is better than flank or round steaks. Again, none of this is a mystery and there are no magical combinations to learn, but you have to be willing to make these kinds of substititions PERMANENTLY.

I've been following the GI diet for almost a year now, with very good results. I supplemented it with a serious exercise program, but on the other hand, I never followed the stricter "Phase I" portion of the diet (where you are supposed to eat nothing but "green light" foods). I've cut "red light" foods 99% out of my diet (I can't give up cream in my coffee) and "yellow light" foods make up less than 20% of my diet. I do not feel hungry or deprived, and I eat plenty of stuff I like.

There are several recipes in this book that work very well as meal staples. I use them repeatedly, week after week. "Living the GI Diet," by the same author, is basically a GI Diet cookbook with many more recipes, also worth getting.

The Detox Strategy: Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps

The Detox Strategy: Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps

Commonly used in ancient and traditional societies, herbal cleansing remains central to health care in Asian, Indian and Native American cultures. In her five-part RENEW program, written with physician Smith, nutritional consultant Watson (The Fiber35 Diet) applies her winning style, demonstrated in her PBS specials, to educate readers about pervasive toxins that cause alarming rates of illness and death. With facts, studies and statistics, Watson contends that consumers cannot rely on regulating agencies to protect them (for example, in 1972 the U.S. banned the carcinogen DDT, but it is still produced here, exported to other countries and then imported back in DDT-treated foods grown there). The program, running from six weeks for basic and advanced cleanses to 14 weeks with optional liver and heavy-metal cleanses, shows readers how to reduce exposure; eliminate toxins from their bodies; and support their natural detox capacity with herbal supplements, diet, exercise and such treatments as colonics and therapeutic baths. Watson includes a few recipes, sample menus and a schedule for periodic cleanses. The weight of toxic exposure from unavoidable sources (pesticides, dental work, processed foods, home furnishings, clothing, playground equipment and fluorescent lighting, among many others) can seem overwhelming, but Watson's balanced approach provides readers with effective ways to gradually lessen the load. Regardless of where and how you live, your body is harboring dozens if not hundreds of toxins that could be sabotaging your health. Low on energy? Dealing with chronic illness? Having trouble losing weight? Toxins might be to blame. From your mattress to your toothpaste to your nonstick pans to the food you eat and the (bottled) water you drink -- every day your body is bombarded with chemicals that can alter the way your body works, affecting its natural processes and capacity to heal and maintain vibrancy. Even though we are built to handle foreign substances effectively, our liver and other organs simply cannot cope with today's glut of toxins, many of which are too foreign and toxic for our bodies to manage well. This ultimately causes us to age prematurely, to gain weight, and to become more prone to disease.

The Detox Strategy by Brenda Watson, C.N.C., who is the bestselling author of The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret, a PBS mainstay, and an expert on internal cleansing and detoxification, introduces us to the revolutionary RENEW program (Reduce, Eliminate, Nourish, Energize, Wellness), which aids in reversing the effects of aging and rejuvenating the body and mind. The program offers a holistic approach to protecting and nurturing your body's innate purification physiology. The result is a higher quality of life, more energy, longevity.

The Detox Strategy reveals:

* The truth about where toxins come from and how they affect our bodies
* How toxins can accelerate the aging process by causing poor health and chronic disease
* How to determine your individual level of toxic exposure and the steps you can take to reduce it
* Why efforts to cleanse and detoxify the body are an essential part of enhancing one's energy and vitality and preserving overall health
* How maintaining a cleaner, more vibrant body can affect longevity

The Detox Strategy includes a detailed herbal supplement plan for gently flushing out harmful toxins -- including heavy metals like lead and mercury -- plus delicious original recipes for nourishing meals that further promote detoxification. The Detox Strategy teaches cleansing concepts that are researched and clinically proven, and it provides you with the necessary tools to live in a purer and more energized body. Brenda Watson wants you to know the truth about your body and to help you live a longer and healthier life. With this easy-to-follow program you can jump-start your system and get on a path to optimum wellness. Are you ready?

Toxic influences on the mind and spirit are also explored and suggestions for achieving emotional balance round out this whole-health plan. Knowing the risks and rewards of a less toxic lifestyle empowers consumers to make the choices that result in not only better physical health, but in improved emotional health as well.

7-Day Detox Miracle, Revised 2nd Edition: Revitalize Your Mind and Body with This Safe and Effective Life-Enhancing Program

7-Day Detox Miracle, Revised 2nd Edition: Revitalize Your Mind and Body with This Safe and Effective Life-Enhancing Program

This guide for a purifying fast and follow up detox diet may seem rather complicated if you do EVERYTHING, but there are some passages that let you know the key supplements to take and although this may seem hard to accept now, following this plan for about a week or so is not impossible. One also needs to be patient with oneself about how perfectly the diet's many recommendations are followed.

I lost four pounds in one week the first time I tried the diet, and found that soon after, when I went back to "regular food" my craving for certain foods was all but gone, and for others, greatlyl reduced. I still maintain some of the supplements but have reduced my intake to once a day to save money (I was faithful about the twice a day requirement on many of them during the initial week).

I have had a series of back and knee injuries and had taken muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories with some regularity for years. I now think these substances had built up in my body, because within about two to three weeks of my weeklong detox (followed up by a less rigid diet that was nonetheless much improved over my usual diet), I felt a real difference, as if something had just gone out of me, not sure how else to express it. It's even helped my mood and energy.

I sympathize with those reviewers who felt that there was just no way for them to work this out because other family members could not support it. It IS an added burden to cook different meals, do special shopping, and yes the food can be boring if one lacks time to make the jazzier versions of the organic veggie meals. Fortunately, I have a flexible spouse and have taken a number of things out of my diet over the years--caffiene, alcohol, esp.

I guess I'd recommend that you ease up to giving up some of these things if you drink coffee, liquor, etc. It might be easier than dealing with a complicated diet and caffeine withdrawal all at once, for example. The supplements really can help you, however, clean out any toxins that come into your system while you are on the diet. Your body will start to try to get rid of the toxins, releasing them into the blood, and it may feel worse before it feels better. If you hang in there, take your supplements--I found NAC, Milk Thistle, and, of all things, Charcoal, especially useful--the discomforts may be somewhat reduced, as they were for me.

Still I highly recommend this and will continue to use it from time to time. The first time through, I found it hard to follow up in terms of adding foods, bit by bit, to detect allergies. But I did figure out I was very sensitive to white sugar, and cut back, with good results. Same a bit with wheat and things like corn chips. I've continued to lose weight (three more pounds in the following month, without any effort) and have fewer cravings, so I think it really works.

I've also done the diet for just six days another time because of family commitments, but still found it very useful and cleansing.

Give it a try at a workable time--but if you are ill, do it sooner, not later.

Eating Disorders Information for Teens: Health Tips About Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, and Other Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders Information for Teens: Health Tips About Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, and Other Eating Disorders

Grade 7 Up–Divided into well-organized sections, this comprehensive volume examines in great detail the causes, symptoms, treatments, and prevention of eating disorders, as well as such related issues as body image, self-esteem, athleticism, and nutrition. Features such as It's a Fact!! and What's It Mean? allow students to get quick information and/or a clearer understanding of what they have already read. Very much like Mark J. Kittleson's The Truth about Eating Disorders (Facts On File, 2004), this book covers the topic in a lucid manner but delves deeper into every aspect of an eating disorder. The appendix is filled with additional resources, including Web sites and contact information for reputable organizations. A solid addition for any nonfiction or reference collection.–Kristen M. Great Health Hints & Handy Tips

Great Health Hints & Handy Tips

Enhanced by hundreds of illustrations and divided into eleven sections, a compilation of more than four thousand health tips provides valuable information on diet, nutrition, exercise, personal fitness, illness, recovery, physicians, and other topics. 20,000 first printing.

This compendium of brief facts on health, safety, and fitness is divided into chapters covering broad subject areas: diet and nutrition, looking your best, your family's well-being, and more. One-to four-page articles within each chapter discuss specific subjects such as stress management, skin care, childproofing the home, and choosing an HMO. The information is presented in list format, recommending specific steps for achieving a goal (e.g., putting nonskid mats both inside and outside bathtubs and showers to reduce falls). Emphasis is on simple, practical information. Charts and color illustrations supplement the text.

The information is current, but the book lacks focus, covering many subjects on a superficial level. One can find first aid tips, advice on composting, step-parenting techniques, and house-cleaning hints. Patrons using the reference collection require more depth than this book provides. Lay medical encyclopedias such as The Mayo Clinic Family Health Book (Morrow, 1990) offer better coverage of health topics, while Charles B. Inlander's Consumer's Medical Desk Reference (Hyperion, 1995) provides superior information about insurance and medicolegal issues. Great Health Hints & Handy Tips is best suited to home libraries or circulating collections. It is not a necessary purchase for reference collections.

Mental Health Information for Teens

Mental Health Information for Teens: Health Tips About Mental Wellness and Mental Illness : Including Facts About Mental and Emotional Health, Depression ... Mood Disorders, Self-in (Teen Health Series)

Mental Health Information for Teens

Grade 6-Up–This update to the 2001 edition is divided into 49 chapters, each focusing on a specific psychological topic or related topic relevant to functioning in school and daily life. The chapters are further organized into sections categorized by broader themes or issues. The six parts address major categories of psychiatric disorders, various aspects of mental wellness, and coping mechanisms and strategies for optimizing mental health. Information about resources, therapies, medications, and assistance for adolescents is also included. This new edition provides more coverage of current problems prevalent in young adult populations, such as self-injury disorders, bullying, and dating violence. As in the earlier edition, there are numerous sidebars with facts and tips, but they are still unappealing gray-shaded boxes. Nonetheless, due to the book's valuable content, it is an excellent resource, especially for collections that do not have the earlier edition.–Caroline Geck, Kean University, Union, NJ

Mental Health Information for Teens : Health Tips about Mental Health (Teen Health Series)

Mental Health Information for Teens : Health Tips about Mental Health (Teen Health Series)

Gr 7 Up-Students looking for basic information on a wide array of concerns can find the jumping-off point for more advanced research by consulting this comprehensive overview. The first section includes 15 chapters on such issues as self-esteem, physical appearance, peer pressure, stress, love, abuse, and grief, and advice for dealing with each. "Common Types of Mental Illness," the second section, is comprised of 20 chapters describing every disorder, phobia, and addiction one can imagine. "Suicide" includes chapters on symptoms and prevention, including myths and questions. "Getting Treatment" provides guidelines and recommendations for professional help, the creation of self-help groups, and various medical treatments (with a whole chapter on St. John's Wort). "If You Need More Information" offers extensive online and print recommendations for mental health, alcohol, and substance-abuse resources. Each of the five major sections concludes with an expansive list of references. The layout and use of white space, bold type, and shaded insets are appealing to the eye. On one hand, readers will find the material accessible and informative, with the shaded notes, facts, and embedded glossary insets adding appropriately to the already interesting and succinct presentation. On the other, some readers will be turned off by the hokeyness of some of the "attention grabbers," like calling the vocabulary lists "Weird Words." One also wonders about the lack of balance in a resource that provides a veritable smorgasbord of worrisome symptoms to further concern already anxious teens. One hopes a psychologist or a counselor will be on hand and knowledgeable when those moments of anxiety arise.

Flu: The Story Of The Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus that Caused I

Flu: The Story Of The Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus that Caused I

Feeling tired, achy, and congested? You'll hope not after reading science writer Gina Kolata's engrossing Flu, a fascinating look at the 1918 epidemic that wiped out around 40 million people in less than a year and afflicted more than one of every four Americans. This tragedy, just on the heels of World War I and far more deadly, so traumatized the survivors that few would talk about it afterward. Kolata reports
on the scientific investigation of this bizarre outbreak, in particular the attempts to sequence the virus' DNA from tissue samples of victims. She also looks at the social and personal effects of the disease, from improved public health awareness to the loss of productivity. (The disease affected 20- to 40-year-olds disproportionately.)

How could this disease, now almost trivial to healthy young people, have become so virulent? The answer is complex, invoking epidemiology, immunology, and even psychology, but Kolata cuts a swath through medical papers and statistical reports to tell a story of an out-of-control virus exploiting an exhausted world on the brink of transition into modern society. Through letters, interviews, and news reports, she pieces together a cautionary tale that captures the horror of a devastating illness. Research marches onward, but we're still at the mercy of something as simple as the flu. --Rob Lightner --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

"It was a plague so deadly that if a similar virus were to strike today, it would kill more people in a single year than heart disease, cancers, strokes, chronic pulmonary disease, AIDS and Alzheimer's disease combined." Between 20 million and 100 million people worldwide died in the 1918 flu pandemic, but for years afterward this deadliest plague in history was almost completely forgotten. Histories and even medical texts rarely mentioned it. This disconnect between the flu's devastation and its obscurity is the starting point for Kolata's incisive history. She explains how the plague spread, covers the various speculations about its causes and origins and gives an account of the search to retrieve a specimen of the virus strain once genetic science had advanced enough to unravel the virus's mysteries. Tissue samplesAfrom an obese woman buried in the permafrost of Alaska and from two soldiers who died in army campsApreserved by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in thumb-sized bits of paraffin prove to be the last remaining sources of the 1918 strain. Kolata, a science writer for the New York Times and author of Clone, profiles the scientists who tracked down these samples, follows their investigations and explains their conclusions. Could such a deadly flu appear again? Many scientists fear it could, hence their quick response to the 1997 outbreak of chicken flu in Hong Kong, which led to the slaughter of 1.2 million birds and, Kolata argues, averted another worldwide disaster. Clearly explaining both the science and the social toll of the pandemic, Kolata writes an admirable history and soberly spells out how the U.S. government is preparedAor unpreparedAfor a similar public health threat today. Life Over Cancer: The Block Center Program for Integrative Cancer Treatment

Life Over Cancer: The Block Center Program for Integrative Cancer Treatment

Dr. Keith Block is at the global vanguard of innovative cancer care. As medical director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment in Evanston, Illinois, he has treated thousands of patients who have lived long, full lives beyond their original prognoses. Now he has distilled almost thirty years of experience into the first book that gives patients a systematic, research-based plan for developing the physical and emotional vitality they need to meet the demands of treatment and recovery.

Based on a profound understanding of how body and mind can work together to defeat disease, this groundbreaking book offers:

• Innovative approaches to conventional treatments, such as “chronotherapy”–chemotherapy timed to patients’ unique circadian rhythms for enhanced effectiveness and reduced toxicity

• Dietary choices that make the biochemical environment hostile to cancer growth and recurrence, and strengthen the immune system’s ability to attack remaining cancer cells

• Precise supplement protocols to tame treatment side effects, relieve disease-related symptoms, and modify processes like inflammation and glycemia that can fuel cancer if left untreated

Does it feel as if you’re fighting your body to lose even one pound—or just to maintain your current weight? Respected health and wellness expert and bestselling author Jillian Michaels has been there, too. So she consulted top experts in the field of metabolism and discovered that she’d inadvertently been abusing her endocrine system for years. After “fixing” her own metabolism, she decided to share what she learned by devising this simple, 3-phase plan that engages all the weight-loss hormones (including the friendly HGH, testosterone, DHEA; and the not-so-friendly: insulin, cortisol, and excess estrogen).

In Master Your Metabolism, discover how to:
•REMOVE “anti-nutrients” from your diet
•RESTORE foods that speak directly to fat-burning genes
•REBALANCE energy and your hormones for effortless weight loss

Michaels offers a wealth of information throughout, including: shopping lists and online shopping resources, hormone-trigger food charts, how to eat “power nutrient” foods on a budget, smart strategies for eating out, quick and easy recipes, as well as mini-programs for addressing PMS, andropause, metabolic syndrome, PCOS, and menopause.
