The Myth of Osteoporosis

The Myth of Osteoporosis

The Myth of Osteoporosis is a research-based work that provides clear insight into the myths of osteoporosis. These myths motivate both patient and physician into a lifetime of unnecessary testing and drug therapy — therapy that can in fact be life-threatening. Gillian Sanson's well-documented explanation of these myths can spare women great anxiety. She takes the fear out of aging and restores women's sense of control over their bodies. She gives women good reasons for challenging the common way that osteoporosis is handled in the United States and in many other industrialized nations.

Osteoporosis: An Exercise Guide

Osteoporosis: An Exercise Guide

One of the most practical exercise guides written to help fight against osteoporosis and low bone mass. Ms. Bissinger utilizes her years of experience teaching and treat patients to create an easy to use, simple exercise guide. Beautifully illustrated, the exercises offer an effective program to improve strength, balance, and posture. Thanks to her years as a physicial therapist, she has provided an unique section illustrating safe ways to perform many activities one performs on a daily basis. Safe ways to perform simple acts such as sitting, lifting, and sneezing are demonstrated in her section on "activities of Daily Living".

As a physician, I recommend this book to all my patients who are concerned about osteoporosis. It is written by a physical therapist who has chosen specific exercises that can strengthen bones. The book is beautifully illustrated and very simple to follow. I advise any patient who wants to begin exercising to start with this book. I wish there were more books available that were as concise and helpful to one's overall health.

Statins may cut pneumonia death, blood clot risks

“Daily updated news on Cholesterol”—Cholesterol-fighting drugs known as statins reduced the risk of dying from pneumonia or developing dangerous blood clots in the legs, adding to a growing list of benefits from the popular drugs, two research groups said on Monday.

Statins, the world’s top-selling drugs, cut heart attack and stroke risk, and research has suggested other benefits including possibly protecting against Alzheimer’s disease.

Some studies have linked statin use with decreased risk of severe sepsis — infection of the bloodstream — or death associated with infections, but there had been conflicting findings on pneumonia, according to Dr. Reimar Thomsen of Aarhus University and Aalborg Hospital in Denmark.

Thomsen led a new study tracking 29,900 patients treated for pneumonia in Denmark that found that those who were taking statins before hospitalization had a 31 percent lower risk of dying from pneumonia than those who were not.

About 5 percent of the people in the study were taking statins before developing pneumonia, an inflammation of the lungs generally caused by an infection, the researchers said.

Among those not taking statins, 16 percent died within 30 days of being hospitalized with pneumonia and 22 percent died within 90 days, the researchers wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Among statin users, 10 percent died within 30 days of hospitalization and 17 percent died within 90 days.

“In recent years, researchers found out that statins have a lot of effects besides cholesterol lowering. They are anti-inflammatory drugs that dampen inflammatory cells and stabilize the (blood) vessels,” Thomsen said by e-mail.

Many patients with pneumonia die of overwhelming inflammation, and statins may help dampen this inflammation, Thomsen said. The drugs also may decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke that may be triggered by inflammation associated with severe infection, Thomsen added.

Separately, researchers at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia found that statins may help prevent the development of deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, in which blood clots form usually in the lower leg or thigh.

In a group of people with several different types of cancer, 21 percent of those not taking statins developed DVT and pulmonary embolism, a sometimes-fatal condition in which a blood clot typically from the legs blocks an artery in the lung, compared to 8 percent of those who took statins, the researchers found.

The findings were presented at a meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Statins include atorvastatin, made by Pfizer Inc under the brand name Lipitor; pravastatin or Pravachol, made by Bristol-Myers Squibb ; fluvastatin, made by Novartis AG under the brand name Lescol, and several others.

Statins lower levels of fatty substances such as low-density lipoprotein, or “bad” cholesterol, and triglycerides. They also raise levels of high-density lipoprotein or “good” cholesterol.

Statins cut key indicator of prostate cancer: Research

“Daily updated news on cholesterol”—Cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins modestly reduce levels of a protein in a man’s blood that doctors often use to screen for prostate cancer, researchers said on Tuesday. But it remains uncertain whether men who take statins have a lower risk for developing prostate cancer or whether the drugs may make it harder to detect prostate tumors with a common screening blood test, the researchers said.

Prostate specific antigen, or PSA, levels dropped by about 4 percent in 1,214 men at a veterans’ medical center in North Carolina after they began taking statins, the researchers wrote in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The biggest PSA declines were seen in men who took higher statin doses, those who had the biggest drop in cholesterol levels, and those who had the highest PSA levels to begin with, the researchers said.

A common screening test for prostate cancer measures levels of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels may indicate cancer or other prostate conditions.

If a man has a certain level of PSA, doctors might order a biopsy to confirm that there is cancer in prostate tissue.

Dr. Stephen Freedland of Duke University School of Medicine and the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center in North Carolina, who led the study, said he believes statins may cut a man’s risk of developing aggressive, advanced prostate cancer.

But it also is possible statins may make it tougher to screen for prostate cancer by obscuring evidence of disease.

“It’s obviously the unanswered question: is this a good thing that we’ve lowered their PSAs and therefore their chance of prostate cancer is lower? … Or are we just masking the cancer and making it harder to detect. I wish I had that answer,” Freedland said in a telephone interview.

“In a good proportion of these men, the PSA levels declined sufficiently to a point where physicians might not recommend a biopsy, so it’s really important that we understand what’s at work here, so we can be sure we’re not missing cancers because of deceptively low PSA levels,” Dr. Robert Hamilton of the University of Toronto, another of the researchers, said in a statement.

Statins, the world’s top-selling drugs, cut heart attack and stroke risk. Studies have suggested a number of other benefits including protecting against Alzheimer’s disease, dying from pneumonia or developing dangerous blood clots.

Research has been less clear about statins and cancer.

Statins include atorvastatin, made by Pfizer Inc under the brand name Lipitor; pravastatin or Pravachol, made by Bristol-Myers Squibb; fluvastatin, made by Novartis AG under the brand name Lescol; and several others.

Separately, findings released on Monday from a study funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health showed that taking selenium and vitamin E supplements, either alone or in combination, did not reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in men worldwide, with about 780,000 men diagnosed per year, and the sixth mostly deadly form, with about 250,000 deaths per year, the American Cancer Society said.

Cholesterol Down: Ten Simple Steps to Lower Your Cholesterol in Four Weeks--Without Prescription Drugs

Take Control of Your Cholesterol— Without Drugs

If you are one of the nearly 100 million Americans struggling with high cholesterol, then Dr. Janet Brill offers you a revolutionary new plan for taking control of your health—without the risks of statin drugs. With Dr. Brill’s breakthrough Cholesterol Down Plan, you simply add nine “miracle foods” to your regular diet and thirty minutes of walking to your daily routine. That’s all. This straightforward and easy-to-follow program can lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by as much as 47 percent in just four weeks.

Cholesterol Down: Ten Simple Steps to Lower Your Cholesterol in Four Weeks--Without Prescription Drugs

Cholesterol Down explains Dr. Brill’s ten-point plan as well as the science behind it. You’ll learn how each miracle food affects LDL cholesterol and how the foods work together for maximum effect, as well as:

• How eating whole grains helps reduce LDL cholesterol in your bloodstream
• Why antioxidants keep plaque from building up in your arteries
• How certain steps change the structure of LDL cholesterol particles (and why it’s best for them to be large and fluffy)
• Why walking just thirty minutes a day lowers “bad” cholesterol and cuts dangerous belly fat

With everything you need to stay focused on the plan, including a daily checklist, a six-month chart for racking LDL cholesterol changes, tools for assessing your risk level for cardiovascular disease, sample weekly menus, and even heart-healthy recipes, Cholesterol Down is the safe and effective alternative or complement to statin drugs.

The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure: The Ultimate Program for Preventing Heart Disease

Robert Kowalski's personal story is legendary. By the age of forty-one, he had suffered a heart attack and had undergone two coronary bypass surgeries. A traditional dietary approach to lowering his cholesterol failed dismally, and faced with the unpleasant alternative of a lifetime on medication, he created a program that proved astonishingly effective for him -- and legions of others worldwide who used it.

The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure: The Ultimate Program for Preventing Heart Disease

Today Kowalski has beaten heart disease, lives an unlimited and vigorous lifestyle, and uses no prescription drugs. Now, with new information about risk factors, exercise, and supplements, The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure is even more powerful in fighting heart disease. It includes:

* The facts about homocysteine and the deadly cholesterol Lp(a)

* A diet that jump-starts cholesterol reduction

* The heart-healthy secrets of niacin, other B vitamins, and safe supplements

* The latest findings on exercise

* New cholesterol-testing methods

* New heart-healthy products ... and more!

Arm yourself against heart disease-America's number-one killer-and increase your chances for a long, healthy life with The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure.

Review: By Donald Mitchell "a Practical Optimist"

This book deserves many more than five stars! Millions of people will lead longer, healthier, and more productive lives from following the advice here.

In the last 15 years, knowledge about how to reduce heart disease has made major strides. This book is the best source I have seen about what has been learned, and how to apply it to help yourself and those you love. You will probably find it helpful to bring your copy along to see your physician because many primary care physicians will not be up-to-date with the latest findings in some areas, such as the use of supplements.

If you liked Mr. Kowalski's first program for controlling cholesterol, originally published in 1987, you will adore this book. When asking himself what had changed he noted, "Why, practically everything is new!" Mr. Kowalski reviews in detail the strengths and weaknesses of that program, describes the research that has been conducted on cardiovascular health since then, and shows you other risks in addition to cholesterol that must be addressed. He also debunks pseudo-science about cholesterol control.

What impressed me the most is that Mr. Kowalski's old and new programs have worked perfectly for him. Here is a man who had his first heart attack at age 35 and double bypass. He had a second heart attack at 41, followed by a quadruple bypass. In the foreword, cardiac surgeon Dr. Jack Sternlieb describes how the most rigorous tests of Mr. Kowalski's heart and arteries show that it has no blockages as of 1999. Without this program, Mr. Kowalski would probably have needed another bypass operation several years ago. His family record of heart disease is not a good one, and he probably has a genetic tendency to problems in this area. Mr. Kowalski is very physically active now, and has no limitations on his life style due to his cardiac history.

The new program has familiar elements in it, but is considerably less restrictive than the old one. You can eat a lot more foods, and a lot more fat (as long as it is the right kind of fat). The dietary guidelines are quite similar to the new ones brought out by the American Heart Association in 2000.

For most people, the diet features avoiding saturated fat and trans fatty acids, limiting overall fat to hold weight at a healthy level for your height, eating fish at least twice a week (especially fatty fish), lots of fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads and cereals, consuming soluble fiber, lots of fluids, limiting sugars and empty carbohydrates, and eating slowly. Exercise is 15 miles of walking a week. A variety of supplements are encouraged (especially antioxidents, B vitamins, minerals, polysterols, and pantathine). Don't smoke. Limit alcohol consumption to moderate daily levels, but do not imbibe solely for the cardiovascular benefit. Take one aspirin a day if your stomach can handle it.

I liked the candor in the book quite a lot. For example, "I'm a little embarrassed when I look at the subtitle of the original book, which promises `no deprivation.'"

In addition to the overall recommendations, each element is described in detail including the scientific studies that support why it works, who should not follow the recommendation, how to work with your doctor for the best results, side effects that can occur, and how these recommendations compare with the various prescription medications now available for lowering cholesterol. He also describes how these recommendations affect other factors for cardiovascular risk such as the amount of low-density lipoprotein (a negative component of overall cholesterol), high-density lipoprotein (a positive component of overall cholesterol), triglycerides, homocysteine, and C-reactive proteins. The section on niacin (B-3) was particularly interesting since it involves changing liver functions, and you are encouraged to work with your doctor in this area. I was not familiar with the "niacin flush" but was glad to learn that the newer versions usually avoid that problem. I especially found the discussions of the special issues that women, young people, and seniors have to be helpful.

Get this book today . . . follow its advice . . . and keep it with you!
