Over 100 useful, helpful, comforting and life affirming tools, tips, and stories from the trenches of breast cancer survival. Haven't you wished you could find a book that offers the newly diagnosed with breast cancer tried and true techniques for getting through their coming ordeal? Mary Olsen Kelly wished the same thing while she was undergoing treatments. Finally, after years of futile searching, she decided to write the book herself. This book is the best friend you wish you had; a friend who will take you by the hand and lead you through the confusing maze of your medical journey. Heartfelt and immediate, this book delivers personal and practical advice from and for Breast Cancer survivors, family and friends. The book was born from a few burning questions: How can I get through this? Can anyone help me on my journey through breast cancer treatments? In this guidebook, Kelly shares the results of her search, information that she voraciously gathered during the year of her medical journey with breast cancer and through the five years since.
Review
I appreciate that author Mary Olsen Kelly has produced this very useful book for patients before, during and after treatments. The tools and tips are excellent, and the stories in each chapter bring to life the situations where these tools and tips will be most needed. --A. Lindberg, Coordinator Cancer Resource Center
Reading this book is like a friendly visit from a fellow breast cancer survivor. (As though you're with) someone who s been there, knows exactly how to deal with it and it eager to share. This handy guide is full of useful advice (like which numbing cream works best before a chemotherapy injection), resources (like personal recipes for fighting nausea) and encouraging anecdotes from Kelly as well as other breast cancer patients. - --Mamm Magazine January/February 2007
Written by a breast cancer survivor, I found this book incredibly helpful and inspiring to patient's newly diagnosed with breast cancer. I read it cover to cover and found it full of great tips and helpful resources. It will be an excellent addition to the packet of materials our hospital gives to those newly diagnosed with breast cancer. --L. Carry, Director Women's Health Programs
Eating Disorders Information for Teens: Health Tips About Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, and Other Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders Information for Teens: Health Tips About Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, and Other Eating Disorders
Grade 7 Up–Divided into well-organized sections, this comprehensive volume examines in great detail the causes, symptoms, treatments, and prevention of eating disorders, as well as such related issues as body image, self-esteem, athleticism, and nutrition. Features such as It's a Fact!! and What's It Mean? allow students to get quick information and/or a clearer understanding of what they have already read. Very much like Mark J. Kittleson's The Truth about Eating Disorders (Facts On File, 2004), this book covers the topic in a lucid manner but delves deeper into every aspect of an eating disorder. The appendix is filled with additional resources, including Web sites and contact information for reputable organizations. A solid addition for any nonfiction or reference collection.–Kristen M. Todd, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY

Great Health Hints & Handy Tips
Enhanced by hundreds of illustrations and divided into eleven sections, a compilation of more than four thousand health tips provides valuable information on diet, nutrition, exercise, personal fitness, illness, recovery, physicians, and other topics. 20,000 first printing.
This compendium of brief facts on health, safety, and fitness is divided into chapters covering broad subject areas: diet and nutrition, looking your best, your family's well-being, and more. One-to four-page articles within each chapter discuss specific subjects such as stress management, skin care, childproofing the home, and choosing an HMO. The information is presented in list format, recommending specific steps for achieving a goal (e.g., putting nonskid mats both inside and outside bathtubs and showers to reduce falls). Emphasis is on simple, practical information. Charts and color illustrations supplement the text.
The information is current, but the book lacks focus, covering many subjects on a superficial level. One can find first aid tips, advice on composting, step-parenting techniques, and house-cleaning hints. Patrons using the reference collection require more depth than this book provides. Lay medical encyclopedias such as The Mayo Clinic Family Health Book (Morrow, 1990) offer better coverage of health topics, while Charles B. Inlander's Consumer's Medical Desk Reference (Hyperion, 1995) provides superior information about insurance and medicolegal issues. Great Health Hints & Handy Tips is best suited to home libraries or circulating collections. It is not a necessary purchase for reference collections.

Mental Health Information for Teens
Mental Health Information for Teens: Health Tips About Mental Wellness and Mental Illness : Including Facts About Mental and Emotional Health, Depression ... Mood Disorders, Self-in (Teen Health Series)
Grade 6-Up–This update to the 2001 edition is divided into 49 chapters, each focusing on a specific psychological topic or related topic relevant to functioning in school and daily life. The chapters are further organized into sections categorized by broader themes or issues. The six parts address major categories of psychiatric disorders, various aspects of mental wellness, and coping mechanisms and strategies for optimizing mental health. Information about resources, therapies, medications, and assistance for adolescents is also included. This new edition provides more coverage of current problems prevalent in young adult populations, such as self-injury disorders, bullying, and dating violence. As in the earlier edition, there are numerous sidebars with facts and tips, but they are still unappealing gray-shaded boxes. Nonetheless, due to the book's valuable content, it is an excellent resource, especially for collections that do not have the earlier edition.–Caroline Geck, Kean University, Union, NJ

Mental Health Information for Teens : Health Tips about Mental Health (Teen Health Series)
Gr 7 Up-Students looking for basic information on a wide array of concerns can find the jumping-off point for more advanced research by consulting this comprehensive overview. The first section includes 15 chapters on such issues as self-esteem, physical appearance, peer pressure, stress, love, abuse, and grief, and advice for dealing with each. "Common Types of Mental Illness," the second section, is comprised of 20 chapters describing every disorder, phobia, and addiction one can imagine. "Suicide" includes chapters on symptoms and prevention, including myths and questions. "Getting Treatment" provides guidelines and recommendations for professional help, the creation of self-help groups, and various medical treatments (with a whole chapter on St. John's Wort). "If You Need More Information" offers extensive online and print recommendations for mental health, alcohol, and substance-abuse resources. Each of the five major sections concludes with an expansive list of references. The layout and use of white space, bold type, and shaded insets are appealing to the eye. On one hand, readers will find the material accessible and informative, with the shaded notes, facts, and embedded glossary insets adding appropriately to the already interesting and succinct presentation. On the other, some readers will be turned off by the hokeyness of some of the "attention grabbers," like calling the vocabulary lists "Weird Words." One also wonders about the lack of balance in a resource that provides a veritable smorgasbord of worrisome symptoms to further concern already anxious teens. One hopes a psychologist or a counselor will be on hand and knowledgeable when those moments of anxiety arise.
